The Sequim Senior Activity Center began forty years ago as a gathering of friends. The group met first at a member’s house but as it grew they began to meet at the transit center on the corner of Second Avenue and Cedar Street. They met there from 1975-1992, when the group bought its current facility on East Hammond Street. The Senior Center expanded the building there in 2002, adding
several activity rooms and offices. In 2010, the Center acquired four and a half acres of land just off the Discovery Trail in Sequim and they are currently fundraising to support the development of a 20,000 square foot facility there.
Although it is named the Sequim Senior Activity Center, it is not just for seniors and there are many young members. The center currently has about 1600 members who join not only for the camaraderie but for discounts on travel tours, computer classes, event tickets and access to the building for family functions.
The Center is a nonprofit organization and organizational funding comes from membership dues, activity fees, donations and grants, not from the city, state or federal governments. The Center tries to be available to all members of the community and they have started a new program, called Healthy Aging for All, to help even more seniors enjoy what the Center has to offer. Healthy Aging for All enables individuals making less than $1579 per month, or couple making less than $2,125 per month get a free membership. The program has funding through grants from the City of Sequim, The Albert Haller Foundation, the Glaser Foundation, and the Mary P. Dolciani Halloran Foundation and it helps support people on limited incomes to join SSAC and participate in activities.
The senior center today has about 1600 members. They produce a monthly newsletter and support numerous activities and causes in the community. They are governed by a nine member board of directors who serve a three-year term. While the center is open to people of all ages, board members must be at least 50 years old and members of the center in good standing.
As a Washington Home Insurance Agency serving folks in the Sequim area, Homer Smith Insurance counts many senior center members among its clients. We salute the Sequim Senior Activity Center and congratulate the Center on forty years of service.
